「Church: Living with compassion」

「教会ー思いやりをもって生きるー」

Congratulations on Pentecost. I want to walk with a lively spirit, guided by the Holy Spirit.

Today, 19 people from Pioneer Ocean View Church in Dan Diego, USA, are attending the service. Pioneer Ocean View Church and Heian Church are sister churches and have church fellowship. I am very happy to be able to hold the Pentecost service with everyone at Pioneer Ocean View Church.

In the church calendar, there is a "liturgical color" that represents the color of the time. The liturgical color of Pentecost is "red" because "tongues like fire appeared in separate parts and rested on each person." I am wearing a red tie today. And I am wearing red socks. I have prepared a red clear file for everyone at Pioneer Ocean View Church. The red clear file contains hymns to sing together. And we are giving away paper crafts of Japanese castles. Since it is a red castle, we are giving away paper crafts of Shuri Castle in Okinawa.

Today's Bible passage is about the beginning of the church festival called Pentecost. There are three major festivals in Christianity: Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost. Christmas is a day to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Easter is a day to celebrate Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. So what is Pentecost? It is a day to celebrate the birth of the church. So this passage of the Bible says that "the church was born."

There are many conflicts all over the world. Many conflicts and fights occur around us. Human society is quite difficult. How should we live? The passage of the Bible we read today is a passage that teaches us how we should live.

Acts 2:1-4 says: [When the day of Pentecost came, and they were all gathered together in one place, suddenly a sound like a violent wind was heard from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then tongues as of fire appeared to them, and they rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The Holy Spirit came upon Jesus' disciples, and they began to speak in other tongues. Jesus' disciples spoke about God not in their own language, but in other languages. "Speaking in other languages" means that they put themselves in the other person's shoes and spoke to them with the other person's feelings in mind. Only then were they listened to carefully. It was important not to speak selfishly, but to speak from the other person's shoes and with the other person's feelings in mind. No matter how wonderful something is, if you speak or do it selfishly, it will not be conveyed. When you put yourself in the other person's shoes and are considerate of them, it will be conveyed.

It is quite difficult to know what state the other person is in. When someone says "I'm fine," they may respond "I'm fine" even if they are not. It is not so easy for people to say what they are thinking.

When I was young, I got sick and had to be hospitalized. I was hospitalized at a university hospital, and at that time I was in a room with six people. It was quite a small room. Since it was a university hospital, there was a medical professor who made rounds. Since everyone was sick, when the six of us were talking, we would say things like, "This hurts here, this is bothering me." And I told him that the next time the professor makes his rounds, he should say, "This hurts here," and "I'll ask him a lot of questions." But when the medical professor actually asked me during the rounds, "Ogasawara Jun, are you okay?", I answered, "I'm okay."

In the TV drama "Hyou wa Mystery to Iu Nare," they also said that if you ask "Are you okay?", most people will answer, "I'm okay," so it would be better to change the way you ask. The main character, Kuno Totonou, calls out to a man who is soaked in the rain and not moving, "Are you okay?" After that, he suddenly realizes that in situations like this, he shouldn't ask, "Are you okay?" The other person will usually respond, "I'm OK." That's why I think it's better to ask, "What's wrong?" Even if someone is soaked in the rain and won't move, if you ask them, "Are you OK?", they will respond, "I'm OK."

That's why it's important for us to think about how the other person feels and to put ourselves in their shoes, wondering how they might be feeling.

Churches are places that value this sort of thing. I don't think they do it very well, but they do value putting ourselves in the other person's shoes and being considerate. This is because churches were originally established by putting ourselves in the other person's shoes and speaking about God. This is because churches were established by "speaking in other countries' languages."

And churches are places that value "forgiveness." The greatest characteristic of Christianity is that it is a religion that was passed down by losers and dropouts. Peter, who was said to be Jesus' first disciple, ran away when Jesus was crucified.

Mark 14:66-72 says this. It is on page 94 of the New Testament. [Now while Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the maids of the high priest came and saw him warming himself by the fire. She looked at him and said, "You also were with Jesus of Nazareth." But Peter denied it, saying, "I do not know or have any idea what you are talking about." And as he went out to the exit, the rooster crowed. When the maid saw Peter, she again began to say to the people around, "This man is one of them." Peter again denied it. After a while, the people by then said to Peter, "You are indeed one of them, for you are a Galilean." And Peter began to swear, even uttering curses, "I do not know the man you are talking about." And immediately the rooster crowed again. Peter suddenly began to cry, remembering the words Jesus had said to him: "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me thrice."

Not only Peter, but the other disciples also betrayed Jesus. Since they all betrayed Jesus, they were failures and dropouts. However, the disciples who betrayed Jesus met the resurrected Jesus, were forgiven, and went on to spread the word about God and Jesus. Christianity is therefore a religion in which failures and dropouts spread the joy of "being forgiven." Because they were forgiven, Christianity places great importance on "forgiveness."

Our world is a society in which failure is not forgiven. If someone makes a small mistake, they will beat them up even if they had been praised up until that point. I feel that we are becoming a society that has lost some of its leeway and tolerance. It may be an old-fashioned idea, but I think it is important to "live with compassion" at times like these.

The church is a place that places great importance on "living with compassion" and "forgiving each other." If you're feeling a bit tired or a bit anxious, please try going to church. There's no need to make a big deal out of going to church. "Maybe I'll just go listen to the organ," "Maybe I'll go because I want to experience the solemn atmosphere," "Well, it's Christmas, so I'll just go." Visit church with that kind of feeling. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful encounter.

I pray that God's grace and blessings will be abundantly upon you all.

ペンテコステおめでとうございます。聖霊に導かれて、生き生きとして歩みをしたいと思います。

今日はアメリカのダンディエゴにあります、パイオニア・オーシャン・ビュー教会から、１９名の方が礼拝にいらしてくださっています。パイオニア・オーシャン・ビュー教会と平安教会は姉妹教会として、教会の交わりをもっています。ペンテコステの礼拝を、パイオニア・オーシャン・ビュー教会の皆様と一緒に守ることができ、とてもうれしく思っています。

教会の暦には、そのときどきの色を表わす「典礼色」というものがあります。ペンテコステの典礼色は、「炎のような舌が分かれ分かれに現れ、一人一人の上にとどまった」ということなので、「赤」です。わたしは今日は、赤いネクタイをしています。そして赤い靴下をはいています。パイオニア・オーシャン・ビュー教会のみなさんには、赤いクリアファイルを用意いたしました。赤いクリアファイルのなかに、一緒に歌う讃美歌などが入っています。そして日本のお城のペーパークラフトをプレゼントしています。赤いお城ということで、沖縄の首里城のペーパークラフトをプレゼントしています。

今日の聖書の箇所は、ペンテコステという教会のお祭りの始まりについて書かれてある聖書の箇所です。キリスト教には大きな祭りが三つあります。クリスマスとイースターとペンテコステです。クリスマスはイエスさまが産まれたことをお祝いする日です。イースターはイエスさまが十字架につけられ、そして復活なさったことをお祝いする日です。ペンテコステというのは、それでは何の日かというと、教会の誕生をお祝いする日です。ですから、「こうして教会が生まれた」ということが、この聖書の箇所には書かれてあります。

世界中でいろいろな争いが起こっています。私たちの周りでもいろいろな争いや喧嘩が起こります。人間の社会はなかなかむつかしいものです。私たちはどのように生きたらいいのでしょうか。今日、読んだ聖書の箇所は、私たちがどのように生きたらいいのかということを教えてくれる聖書の箇所です。

使徒言行録２章１−４節にはこうあります。【五旬祭の日が来て、一同が一つになって集まっていると、突然、激しい風が吹いて来るような音が天から聞こえ、彼らが座っていた家中に響いた。そして、炎のような舌が分かれ分かれに現れ、一人一人の上にとどまった。すると、一同は聖霊に満たされ、“霊”が語らせるままに、ほかの国々の言葉で話しだした】。

イエスさまの弟子たちに聖霊がくだって、彼らは【ほかの国々の言葉で話しだし】ます。イエスさまの弟子たちは、神さまのことを自分の国の言葉ではなくて、ほかの国々の言葉で話しました。「ほかの国々の言葉で話した」というのは、相手の立場に立って、相手の気持ちになって話をしたということです。そのときにはじめてよく聞いてもらえたということです。自分勝手に話をするのではなく、相手の立場に立って、相手の気持ちになって話すということが大切なことだったのです。どんなにすばらしいことであったとしても、自分勝手に話をしたり、自分勝手にやっていたら、それは伝わることはないでしょう。相手の気持ちになって、相手のことを思いやるときに、それは伝わっていきます。

相手がどのような状態であるのかということを知るということは、なかなかむつかしいことです。人は「大丈夫」と言われると、大丈夫でなくても、「大丈夫」と応えてしまったりするわけです。思っていることをそう簡単に人は口に出すということでもないのです。

わたしは若い時に、病気になって入院をするということがありました。大学病院に入院をしたのですが、当時は６人部屋でした。なかなか狭い部屋でした。大学病院ですから医学部の教授の回診というがありました。みんな病気なので、６人で話をしているときは、「ここがいたいとか、ここが気になる」というようなことを言っているわけです。そして今度教授の回診のときには、「ここがいたい」っていってやろとか、「いろいろ質問してみよ」とか言っていました。でも実際に回診のときに医学部の教授から「小笠原純さん、大丈夫ですか」と尋ねられると、「大丈夫です」と応えたりしてしまっていました。

『ミステリーと言う勿れ』というTVドラマでも、やはり「大丈夫」と聞くと、だいたい「大丈夫」と応えるから、尋ね方を変えたほうが良いというようなことを言っていました。主人公の久能整（くのう・ととのう）くんは、雨の中でずぶ濡れで動こうとしない男性に「大丈夫ですか？」と声をかけます。そのあとはっとして、こういうときは「大丈夫ですか」ってきいちゃダメなんだと思います。相手はたいてい「大丈夫です」って応えるわけです。だから「どうかしましたか」と聞いてみたほうが良いと思います。雨の中でずぶ濡れで動こうとしない人でも「大丈夫ですか」と声をかけられると、「大丈夫です」と応えてしまうわけです。

だからこそ、私たちはこの人はどんな気持でいるんだろうというふうに、相手の気持ちになって、相手の立場に立って考えるということが大切です。

教会というところは、そうしたことを大切にしているところです。どれだけできているかというと、なかなかできていないと思うわけですが、でも相手の気持ちになってとか、思いやりをもってということを大切にしているところです。それは教会がもともと、相手の気持ちになって、相手の立場に立って、神さまのことを伝えることによってできてきたところだからです。教会は「ほかの国々の言葉で話す」ということによってできていったところだからです。

そして教会というところは、「赦し合う」ということを大切にしているところです。キリスト教のもっとも大きな特色は、失敗者・落伍者が伝えた宗教だというところです。イエスさまの一番弟子と言われていたペトロさんは、イエスさまが十字架につけられるときに逃げてしまいました。

マルコによる福音書14章66-72節にはこうあります。新約聖書の９４頁です。【ペトロが下の中庭にいたとき、大祭司に仕える女中の一人が来て、ペトロが火にあたっているのを目にすると、じっと見つめて言った。「あなたも、あのナザレのイエスと一緒にいた。」しかし、ペトロは打ち消して、「あなたが何のことを言っているのか、わたしには分からないし、見当もつかない」と言った。そして、出口の方へ出て行くと、鶏が鳴いた。女中はペトロを見て、周りの人々に、「この人は、あの人たちの仲間です」とまた言いだした。ペトロは、再び打ち消した。しばらくして、今度は、居合わせた人々がペトロに言った。「確かに、お前はあの連中の仲間だ。ガリラヤの者だから。」すると、ペトロは呪いの言葉さえ口にしながら、「あなたがたの言っているそんな人は知らない」と誓い始めた。するとすぐ、鶏が再び鳴いた。ペトロは、「鶏が二度鳴く前に、あなたは三度わたしを知らないと言うだろう」とイエスが言われた言葉を思い出して、いきなり泣きだした】。

ペトロさんだけでなく、他のお弟子さんたちもイエスさまを裏切りました。みんなイエスさまを裏切ったわけですから、失敗者であり、落伍者でした。しかしそのイエスさまを裏切ったお弟子さんたちが、復活されたイエスさまに出会い、赦されて、神さまのこと、イエスさまのことを伝えて行きました。ですからキリスト教は失敗者・落伍者が「自分が赦された」という喜びを伝えた宗教なのです。それで自分が赦されたのですから、キリスト教は「赦し合う」ということを大切にしています。

私たちの世の中は失敗が赦されない社会です。ちょっと失敗すると、いままで持ち上げていても袋だたきにしたりします。なにか余裕がなくなって、寛容さがない社会になってきているような気がします。そんなときだからこそ、わたしは古い考えかもしれませんが、「思いやりをもって生きる」ということが大切だと思います。

教会というところは、「思いやりをもって生きる」「赦し合う」ということを大切にしているところです。ちょっと疲れたなあとか、なんかちょっと不安な気がするなあというようなとき、ぜひ教会に行ってみてください。あんまり大げさに考えて教会に行く必要はありません。「ちょっとオルガンを聴きにいってみようか」「ちょっと厳粛な雰囲気を味わいたいからいってみようか」「まあクリスマスだからちょっと行ってみるか」。そんな気持で教会をお訪ねください。すてきな出会いがあると思います。
