「幼子のような者に」

西巻茅子さんという絵本作家がおられます。『わたしのワンピース』（こぐま社）という絵本が、とても有名です。わたしの娘は幼稚園のとき、西巻茅子さんの絵の『ちいさなきいろいかさ』(金の星社)という絵本が好きでした。ですからわたしもこの絵本をよく読みました。西巻茅子さんの絵は、こどもが描いたような絵です。わたしはこの絵をみながら、「なんでこんなへたくそな、こどもの描いたような絵がいいんだろうか」と思っていました。この素朴な疑問を、わたしの妻の容子にしたところ、容子は「これはわざとこどもの描いたような絵を描いているんだ。そしてこの人の絵本は、こどもが描いたような絵のように見えるけれども、構図なんかはとってもよく計算されて描かれてあるんだ」というふうに教えてくれました。わたしはちょっとびっくりしました。わたしにはこどもが描いたへたくそな絵にしか見えないもののなかに、じつは大きな真実が隠されてあったのでした。
あとから何かの本で、たぶん福音館書店の松居直さんの本だったと思いますが、この西巻茅子さんの絵本のことが解説してあって、計算された構図であるというようなことが書いてあって、「ああ、やっぱり容子は絵がわかるんだ」と感心しました。西巻茅子さんはこどもの気持ちを大切にして、そしてこどもが自分の絵と似ていると思ってくれるような、こどもが描いたような絵を描いておられます。こどものときの素直でひたむきな気持ちを、年をとっても持ち続けることは、なかなかむつかしいことですが、西巻さんはこどもが描いたような絵を描き続けることによって、こどもの気持ちをずっと持ち続けているのでしょう。だからこどもから愛される絵本を描くことができるのです。いつまでも幼子のような気持ちを大切にしておられるのでしょうね。
「かみさまへのてがみ」という本は、アメリカの子どもたちが、神さまに書いた手紙です。1975年に書かれた手紙ですから、この手紙を書いたお友だちは、いま50歳くらいになっているのでしょうか。
いちばん最初の手紙は、どんなのかと言うと、【かみさま、ぼくもなかまにいれてよ。あなたのともだちハービーより】。かわいらしいですね。
こんなのもあります。【かみさま、ぼくの おとうとは 四さいです。どうか おねがいだから、おとうとに ぼくのあたまに くるようなこと、やめさせて くれないかなあ。あなたのともだち マーク ７1/2さい】。おもしろいですね。
【あなたは どうして じぶんが かみさまだって わかったんですか？ シャーリーン】。なかなかむつかしい問題ですね。
【かみさま、あなたは てんしたちに しごとは みんな やらせるの？。ママは わたしたちは ママのてんしだって いうの。そいで わたしたちに ようじを ぜんぶ いいつけるの。あいをこめて マリア】。なかなかのお母さんですね。
【かみさま、ぼくは あなたが だいすきです。とっても しんせつなんだもん。ぼくも あなたみたいに いいこに します。ぼくは みんなに しんせつです。おかあさんにも おとうさんにも ふたりのいもうとにも。かみさまって おもしろいでしょうね。みんなに すきになってもらえて。けいぐ トーマス】。「かみさまって おもしろいでしょうね。みんなに すきになってもらえて」。なかなかすてきな言葉ですね。
この『かみさまへのてがみ』を訳した、谷川俊太郎はこう言っています。【時には大人たちの口にする宗教論議よりもはるかにいきいきと、それらの手紙は神のイメージを私たちに示します。子どもたちは実に率直に神に問いかけ、神におどろき、神を発見し、神に注文をつけます。そのまっすぐな魂のありかたは私たちを楽しませると同時に、はげまされもするのではないでしょうか】。
ファリサイ派や律法学者たち、またサドカイ派の人々など、ユダヤ教のいろいろな派が、互いに神さまについて論争したり、またイエスさまに論争をしかけてきたりしていました。イエスさまの時代もまた、宗教論議の盛んな時代でした。そうしたなか、イエスさまはこどもたちのように、素直な気持ちで、神さまに向き合うことの大切さを、弟子たちに教えておられます。
今日の聖書の箇所は「わたしのもとに来なさい」という表題のついた聖書の箇所です。（今日の聖書の箇所は、三つに分けられます。ひとつはマタイによる福音書11章25-26節、そして11章27節、三つ目は11章28-30節となります）。
マタイによる福音書11章25-26節には【そのとき、イエスはこう言われた。「天地の主である父よ、あなたをほめたたえます。これらのことを知恵ある者や賢い者には隠して、幼子のような者にお示しになりました。そうです、父よ、これは御心に適うことでした】とあります。
ここでは、「啓示を与えてくれた神さまへの感謝の祈り」が述べられています。イザヤ書の29章14節（旧約聖書の1105頁）には【それゆえ、見よ、わたしは再び驚くべき業を重ねて、この民を驚かす。賢者の知恵は滅び、聡明な者の分別は隠される】とあります。また詩編19編８節（旧約聖書の850頁）には【主の律法は完全で、魂を生き返らせ、主の定めは真実で、無知な人に知恵を与える】とあります。旧約聖書にも、神さまは秘すべき知識を知者や賢者には隠し、無知な人や価なき人に与えたという考え方があります。しかしイエスさまはもう一歩すすんで、「幼子のような者」にお示しになったと言われます。
マタイによる福音書11章27節には【すべてのことは、父からわたしに任せられています。父のほかに子を知る者はなく、子と、子が示そうと思う者のほかには、父を知る者はいません】とあります。ここでは「父を知る者と子を知る者についての説明」がなされています。神さまはイエスさまにすべてのことを託されました。ですから、神さまのことを知っておられるのは、イエスさまだけなのです。そしてイエスさまは弟子たちに神さまのことを伝えたのです。イエスさまが「これぞ」と思った弟子たちにだけ、神さまのことが伝えられたのです。もちろんそれは弟子たちがりっぱであったということではありません。伝えられる価値のない者であるにもかかわらず、イエスさまが勝手に弟子として選んだ人々に、神さまのことが伝えられたのでした。
マタイによる福音書11章28-30節に【疲れた者、重荷を負う者は、だれでもわたしのもとに来なさい。休ませてあげよう。わたしは柔和で謙遜な者だから、わたしの軛を負い、わたしに学びなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたは安らぎを得られる。わたしの軛は負いやすく、わたしの荷は軽いからである」】とあります。
新共同訳聖書には、「旧約聖書続編付き」という聖書があります。この「旧約聖書続編」というのは、カトリック教会で「第二正典」というふうに位置づけられている部分です。そのなかに「シラ書〔集会の書〕」という文書があります。ヨブ記とか箴言と同じような知恵文学に分類される書物です。シラ書の最後の部分51章23節以下にこうあります。【わたしのそばに来なさい、無学な者たちよ、学舎（まなびや）で時を過ごしなさい。なぜ、いつまでもそのままの状態でいるのか。お前たちの魂は激しく渇いているのに。わたしは口を開いて語ってきた、知恵を得るのに金はかからないと。軛の下にお前の首を置き、魂に教訓を教え込め。知恵はすぐ身近にある。目を開いて見よ。わずかな努力で、わたしが多くの安らぎを見いだしたことを】（5123-5127）。
ユダヤ教の知恵文学でも「知恵はすぐ身近にある。目を開いて見よ。わずかな努力で、わたしが多くの安らぎを見いだしたことを」と言われています。しかし聖書は、知恵はイエスさまが与えてくださるものだと言っています。イエスさまは「わたしの軛は負いやすく、わたしの荷は軽い」と言われます。それはイエスさまが共に軛を負ってくださるからです。いつも隣にいて、疲れた者、重荷を負う者の隣にいてくださり、共に歩んでくださるからです。一方的に重荷を負わすのではなくて、イエスさまが共に歩んでくださるのです。
私たちの救い主であるイエスさまは言われました。【天地の主である父よ、あなたをほめたたえます。これらのことを知恵ある者や賢い者には隠して、幼子のような者にお示しになりました】。
「神さまのことは、子どものほうがよくわかるよ」とイエスさまは言われたのです。大人がむつかしく神さまの話をするよりも、子どものほうは神さまのことをよく知っている。この『かみさまへのてがみ』（谷川俊太郎訳、サンリオ）などを読んでいると、ほんとうにそうだなあというふうに思います。
【これらのことを知恵ある者や賢い者には隠して、幼子のような者にお示しになりました。そうです、父よ、これは御心に適うことでした】。「神さまのことは、子どもがよく知っている。それはとってもいいことだ」とイエスさまは言われました。
イエスさまは神さまは幼子のような者、小さき者に、自分が共にいることをお知らせになったと言われます。幼子のような者とは、いったいどんな人たちなんでしょう。【疲れた者、重荷を負う者は、だれでもわたしのもとに来なさい。休ませてあげよう。わたしは柔和で謙遜な者だから、わたしの軛を負い、わたしに学びなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたは安らぎを得られる。わたしの軛は負いやすく、わたしの荷は軽いからである】。幼子のような者とは、もちろん子どもたちはそうですけれど、疲れた者、重荷を負う者が、幼子のような者だと、聖書は私たちに教えてくれます。
「幼子のような者、疲れた者、重荷を負う者は、みんな神さまのところにやってきて、みんなで休もう」とイエスさまは言われます。だいたい小さい子どもというのは、何の心配もなく、眠ります。どこででも。遊園地などにいっても、一生懸命に遊んで、そして疲れたら、勝手に寝てしまいます。お母さんやお父さんが、荷物を手に持って、大荷物となった子どもを抱えて、死にそうな顔をして歩いているというような風景が、今日も夕方くらいになると遊園地でみられるわけです。大人はそうそう寝られません。眠ってしまうとだれも連れて帰ってくれないから。ときどきそうしたことを忘れて疲れはてて、駅で眠っているお父さんというのも見かけますが・・・。子どもはやっぱり親を信頼して、すべてを委ねているのです。
（ちなみに、わたしは遠くに自動車で行くとき、妻と交替で、自動車を運転します。妻が自動車を運転しているとき、わたしは眠たくなったら眠ります。妻を信じているからです。しかしわたしが自動車を運転しているとき、ぜったい妻は寝ません）。
イエスさまは、「みんなで神さまのところにきて、子どものように休みましょう」と言われました。神さまを信頼して、神さまに委ねて、子どものように休もう。わたしは教会というところは、安心して休むことができるところであればと思います。これ、教会で休むというので、教会を休むというのでないところがミソなのです。「で」と「を」では大違いなので、ひとつ誤解のないように。教会がなにもかも忘れて、神さまの愛の中でゆったり、ゆっくり休めるところであればと思います。
たしかに教会にはいろいろな働きがあり、そうそう休むというふうにもいかないということもあるわけです。「イエスさまの軛は重い」。そんなふうに思えるときも、私たちにはあります。何の心配もなく、何の負担もなく、教会で礼拝を守ることができればと思われる方もおられると思います。「明日の礼拝は司会や」とか「明日は受付と献金当番や」「礼拝のあとに役員会が・・・」。そんなふうに思えるときもあるでしょう。しかしそれでも礼拝は、私たちにとって休息の場であるのです。静かに神さまのみ旨に思いをよせることができるときなのです。同じ神さまを信じる兄弟姉妹がともに集まって、そして共に神さまを賛美することができるときなのです。心を合わせて祈り、隣人のために祈り、私たちのこころを生き生きときれいなものへと導いていただけるときなのです。私たちは私たちの力の源である、この礼拝のときを大切にしたいと思います。
【これらのことを知恵ある者や賢い者には隠して、幼子のような者にお示しになりました】。【疲れた者、重荷を負う者は、だれでもわたしのもとに来なさい。休ませてあげよう】。イエスさまの言葉に招かれて、幼子のようにすなおに、神さまの愛のなかで生きてゆきたいと思います。

"To those who are like little children"

There is a picture book author called Nishimaki Chikako. Her picture book "My Dress" (Kogumasha) is very famous. When my daughter was in kindergarten, she liked the picture book "Little Yellow Umbrella" (Kin no Hoshisha) with illustrations by Nishimaki Chikako. So I often read this picture book too. Nishimaki Chikako's illustrations look like they were drawn by a child. When I looked at these pictures, I wondered, "Why do they like such poorly drawn, childlike pictures?" When I asked my wife Yoko this simple question, she told me, "She intentionally draws pictures that look like they were drawn by a child. And although her picture books look like they were drawn by a child, the composition is very carefully calculated." I was a little surprised. In fact, there was a big truth hidden in what looked to me like a poorly drawn child's picture.
Later, in a book, I think it was by Matsui Nao of Fukuinkan Shoten, there was an explanation of Nishimaki Chikako's picture books, saying that the compositions were carefully calculated, and I was impressed, thinking, "Ah, Yoko really does understand art." Nishimaki Chikako values children's feelings, and draws pictures that look like they were drawn by a child, so that children will recognize them as similar to their own drawings. It is quite difficult to maintain the honest and sincere feelings of a child even as we grow older, but Nishimaki-san continues to draw pictures like those drawn by children, so he must have retained the feelings of a child. That is why he is able to draw picture books that are loved by children. He will always treasure the feelings of a child.
"Letters to God" is a book of letters written by American children to God. Since it was written in 1975, the friend who wrote it must be about 50 years old now.
The very first letter is, "God, please include me. From your friend Herbie." It is so cute.
There is also this one. "God, my little brother is four years old. Please, please, please make my little brother stop coming at me." Your friend Mark, 7 1/2 years old]. Interesting.
How did you know you were a god? Charlene]. That's a pretty difficult question.
God, do you make your angels do all the work? Mommy says we are her angels. And she tells us all the utensils. With love, Maria]. You're quite a mother.
God, I love you. You're so kind. I'll be a good boy like you. I'm kind to everyone. To my mommy, my daddy, and my two little sisters. Gods are interesting, aren't they? I want everyone to like me. Keigu Thomas]. "God is interesting, isn't he? He's liked by everyone." Such a wonderful thing to say.
Shuntaro Tanikawa, who translated "Letters to God," said the following. "These letters show us a much more vivid image of God than the religious debates that adults sometimes have. Children ask God questions, are amazed by him, discover him, and give him orders. Their honest souls entertain us, and at the same time, they encourage us."
Various Jewish sects, such as the Pharisees, the scribes, and the Sadducees, argued with each other about God and also with Jesus. The time of Jesus was also a time of active religious debate. In the midst of all this, Jesus taught his disciples the importance of facing God with an open heart, like children.
Today's Bible passage is a passage with the title "Come to Me." (Today's Bible passage is divided into three parts. One is Matthew 11:25-26 and 11:27, and the third is 11:28-30.)
Matthew 11:25-26 says, "Then Jesus said, 'I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for you have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, it was in your sight.'"
Here, a prayer of thanksgiving to God for the revelation is stated. Isaiah 29:14 (Old Testament, page 1105) says, "Therefore, behold, I will again amaze this people with marvelous deeds. The wisdom of the wise will perish, and the understanding of the discerning will be hidden." Also, Psalm 19:8 (page 850 of the Old Testament) says, "The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the decrees of the Lord are true, giving wisdom to the ignorant." In the Old Testament, there is also the idea that God hides secret knowledge from the wise and the wise, and gives it to the ignorant and the worthless. However, Jesus goes one step further and is said to have revealed it to "a child."
Matthew 11:27 says, "All things have been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father; and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son will reveal it." Here, an explanation is given about "those who know the Father and those who know the Son." God entrusted everything to Jesus. Therefore, only Jesus knows God. And Jesus told his disciples about God. Jesus only told about God to the disciples to whom he thought "this is it." Of course, this does not mean that the disciples were excellent. Jesus preached about God to those whom he chose as his disciples, even though they were not worthy of being preached to.
Matthew 11:28-30 says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
The New Interconfessional Translation of the Bible includes a Bible called "The Sequel to the Old Testament." This "Sequel to the Old Testament" is a section that is considered the "second canon" in the Catholic Church. Within this book is a document called "The Book of Sirach (Ecclesiasticus)." It is a book that is classified as wisdom literature, like the Book of Job and Proverbs. The last part of the Book of Sirach, Chapter 51, Verse 23 and following, reads: [Come to me, you ignorant ones, spend your time in the school. Why do you continue in this state? Your souls are very thirsty. I have opened my mouth and told you that wisdom is cheap. Put your neck under the yoke and teach your soul lessons. Wisdom is close at hand. Open your eyes and see how with little effort I have found much relief] (5123-5127).
In Jewish wisdom literature, it is also said, "Wisdom is close at hand. Open your eyes and see how with little effort I have found much relief." However, the Bible says that wisdom is something that Jesus gives us. Jesus says, "My yoke is easy and my burden is light." That is because Jesus bears the yoke with us. He is always beside us, beside the tired and the burdened, and walks with us. Jesus does not unilaterally place the burden on us, but walks with us.
Our Savior, Jesus, said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth. You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to the little children."
Jesus said, "Children understand the things of God better." Children know more about God than adults who talk about God in complicated ways. When I read books like "Letters to God" (translated by Shuntaro Tanikawa, Sanrio), I think this is really true.
"You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to the little children. Yes, Father, this was pleasing to you." Jesus said, "Children know the things of God better. That is very good."
It is said that God has informed the little children, the little ones, that he is with them. What kind of people are like little children? [Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for yourself. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.] Of course, children are like little children, but the Bible teaches us that those who are tired and burdened are like little children.
Jesus says, "Come to God, all you who are weary and burdened, and let us all rest together." Generally, small children sleep without any worries. Anywhere. Even when they go to an amusement park, they play hard, and when they get tired, they just go to sleep. Today, in the evening, you can see scenes of mothers and fathers walking around with their bags and children in their arms, with expressions of death on their faces, at amusement parks. Adults can't sleep that easily. If they fall asleep, no one will take them home. Sometimes I see fathers who forget about this and fall asleep at the station, exhausted... Children trust their parents and entrust everything to them.
(By the way, when I go to a long distance by car, my wife and I take turns driving. When my wife is driving, I sleep if I get sleepy. Because I trust her. But when I am driving, she never sleeps.)
Jesus said, "Let us all come to God and rest like children." Let's trust God, entrust ourselves to God, and rest like children. I think that the church should be a place where we can rest in peace. The key point here is that I say rest at church, not rest from church. There is a big difference between "at" and "for," so please do not misunderstand. I think that the church should be a place where we can forget about everything and rest comfortably and leisurely in God's love.
It is true that the church has various tasks, and it is not always possible to rest. "Jesus' yoke is heavy." There are times when we feel that way. Some people may wish they could attend church services without any worries or burdens. "I'll be the host for tomorrow's service," "I'll be the receptionist and collection officer tomorrow," "After the service there'll be a board meeting..." There may be times when you feel that way. But worship is still a place of rest for us. It is a time when we can quietly reflect on God's will. It is a time when brothers and sisters who believe in the same God can gather together and praise God together. It is a time when we can pray together, pray for our neighbors, and be guided to make our hearts lively and pure. We want to cherish this time of worship, which is the source of our strength.
[He has hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and has revealed them to the little children]. [Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest]. Invited by Jesus' words, I want to live in God's love as obediently as a little child.
